They say there is a red string
woven through every life.
A single thread
slipping through forests and cities,
over mountains,
across rivers,
through the countless miles
between one heart and another.

As a child,
I thought it was simple.

Two people.
One thread.
One ending.

A promise waiting patiently,
somewhere in the future.
But life has a way
of complicating old stories.
Because sometimes someone arrives
and it feels like finding a path
through a dark dense forest.

A familiar voice.
A shared laugh.
A sense that somehow,
against impossible odds,
your journeys have crossed
for one reason or other.

And for a while,
you walk together.
Watching seasons change.
Watching green leaves become gold.
Watching rivers rise with spring rain
and shrink beneath summer heat.
Believing the road ahead
might belong to both of you.

Then something happens.
Or nothing happens.
And somehow those are not always
different things.

The path bends.
The fog rolls in.
Questions replace certainty.
One traveler keeps walking.
The other disappears
among the trees.
And all that remains
is the feeling that something important
passed through your life.

Like a storm that watered the earth
before moving on.
Like a comet
seen only once
in a lifetime.

Like moonlight on a river;
beautiful,
real,
and impossible to hold.

Maybe the old story is wrong.
Or maybe we have misunderstood it.
Maybe the thread was never meant
to be a leash pulling us toward forever.
Maybe it is a guide.
A way of leading us
toward the people
who will shape us.

The ones who teach us courage.
The ones who teach us loss.
The ones who show us
what we still need to heal.
The ones who remind us
that our hearts are capable
of opening again.

Perhaps there is only one thread.
Perhaps there are many,
crossing and recrossing
like roots beneath the forest floor.

Perhaps some are meant
to last a lifetime.
Perhaps some are meant
to last only long enough
to change the direction
of a single step.

I don’t know.
I don’t know where the thread ends.
I don’t know if it leads
to one soul,
many souls,
or simply back to ourselves.

I only know that somewhere
beyond the next ridge,
beyond the next season,
beyond what I can see,
the thread continues.

And like the river
that does not know the shape of the land or sea,
I continue following it,
wondering,
trusting there is meaning
even when there is no map.
Trusting that some mysteries
were never meant to be solved.
